This course provides methodology focused on five main categories of mistake-proofing tactics and shows examples of these tactics from the domain of laboratory medicine.

It includes video commentary by CAP member pathologists with experience using Lean and other process improvement techniques.

Objectives
As a result of completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Follow a methodology to analyze a process and eliminate or minimize mistakes.
  • Recognize categories of tactics to eliminate or minimize mistakes.
  • Differentiate “knowledge in the head” from “knowledge in the world.”
  • Differentiate “culture of individual excellence” from “culture of process excellence.”
  • Differentiate errors from defects.
  • Differentiate “error of judgment” from “error of execution.”

Laboratory quality managers as well as medical and administrative leaders who are responsible for managing risk and minimizing mistakes in the laboratory
