Description
Worldwide iron deficiency is the major cause of anemia. Though less common, iron overload of sufficient severity can be fatal. The recognition of iron deficiency and iron excess states is therefore critically important for clinicians and laboratorians alike. Therefore, this course addresses laboratory testing relevant to patients’ iron status.
This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.
Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:
- List and interpret laboratory studies of patients’ iron status, including iron, total iron binding capacity, transferrin saturation, and ferritin.
- Recognize the iron profile patterns of iron deficiency and chronic inflammation.
- Discern the iron profile pattern of iron excess.
- Advise and educate clinicians on the causes and diagnosis of iron deficiency and iron excess.
