Description
Molecular testing encompasses many different techniques, each of which have strengths and limitations. Choosing a test that can meet the clinical goals requires an understanding of the techniques and is important for providing the highest value care for patients. As important gatekeepers to the highest value use of ancillary testing techniques for tumor samples, pathologists will learn the strengths and limitations of molecular techniques so they can confidently interpret test descriptions in reference laboratory catalogs and recommend appropriate testing.

This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.

Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Determine the purpose of a molecular assay.
  2. Identify the vocabulary used in molecular assay technical descriptions.
  3. Compare and contrast the strengths and limitations of different molecular techniques and assay designs.
