Description
Precision medicine in cancer increasingly relies on molecular analysis of solid tumor samples. The pathologist’s involvement in coordination and facilitation of patient samples for testing is critical. Preanalytical factors encompass all steps preceding molecular analysis from sample procurement to submission of tissue for testing and includes multiple considerations at each stage of handling. These factors play an important role in the overall quality of the molecular testing and are essential for the pathologist to recognize and optimize to obtain the highest quality results.
This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.
Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:
- Describe the impact of cold ischemic time, fixative time, fixative types, and processing conditions on nucleic acid recovery and downstream testing.
- Identify ways to mitigate interferences and artifacts in molecular testing.
- Recognize how tissue selection and macrodissection can impact molecular testing.
- Select acceptable solid tumor samples for molecular testing in both routine and challenging cases.
