Description
Type O red blood cells are chronically in short supply. These units can be transfused to virtually any patient, however, only 45% of the donor population is type O. Discover and evaluate methods to optimize the use of precious type O red blood cells to support patients and prevent shortages for the hospital and community.

This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.

Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Describe the distribution of O Rh+ (D-antigen present) and O Rh- (D-antigen absent) red cell types in the United States population.
  2. Describe the alloimmunization risk when D+ red cells are transfused to D- patients.
  3. List the appropriate actions for transfusion services to take to deal with a limited supply of O cells.
  4. List actions that blood collection establishments can undertake to efficiently collect and manage O inventory.
  5. Develop communication and mitigation strategies to deal with immediate blood group O national shortage.
