Description
CLIA-88 requires laboratories to develop and follow written procedures for reporting life-threatening laboratory results (critical, alert, or panic values). Laboratories must have critical value (CVAL) policies to meet this requirement. This activity highlights elements of an effective CVAL policy, compares CVAL notification systems, and explores strategies to address communication challenges in both clinical and anatomic pathology.

This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.

Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Define elements of a critical value policy.
  2. Interpret regulatory guidelines with regards to reporting critical values.
  3. List the advantages and disadvantages of using different types of notification systems.
  4. Develop an escalation policy to address challenges in critical value communication.
  5. Apply principles of critical value notification to anatomic pathology.
