Description
Over the last decade much has been learned about pathogenesis of polycythemia vera (PV) resulting in modifications to traditional diagnostic criteria. Current testing algorithms are anchored around serum erythropoietin levels and JAK2 mutation analysis. Phlebotomy remains the cornerstone treatment of PV for thrombosis prevention. This activity provides an updated algorithmic approach to diagnosis and revisits principles of PV treatment.

This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists and residents.

Objectives
As a result of participating in this activity, you should be able to:

  1. List causes of erythrocytosis.
  2. Develop an approach to distinguish between benign and neoplastic etiologies of erythrocytosis.
  3. Describe the role of genetic studies in the diagnosis of polycythemia vera (PV).
  4. Apply the current World Health Organization (2016) criteria for PV.
  5. Describe the role of therapeutic phlebotomy in the management of PV.
  6. Explain the course of PV.
