Description
Understanding the basics of urine drug testing and interpretation of the results will help pathologists provide effective consultation with their clinician colleagues. Both immunoassays and additional definitive testing for opioids are required in certain settings. The urine drug screen (UDS) complements behavior monitoring as an objective means to assess patient compliance.

This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists and residents.

Objectives
As a result of participating in this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Evaluate immunoassay urine drug screen (UDS) results.
  2. Evaluate quantitative UDS results.
  3. Assess aberrant drug behaviors.
  4. Explain the limitations of the opiates immunoassay.
  5. Evaluate the need for definitive testing.
