Description
Acute myeloid leukemia and blastic-appearing hematolymphoid neoplasms may present in a variety of ways. These critical diagnoses require timely identification to enable prompt initiation of appropriate therapy. The pathologist plays a crucial role in ensuring the use of appropriate diagnostic, predictive, and prognostic ancillary studies to enable cost-effective, high quality care.

This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.

Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Discriminate acute myeloid leukemia (AML) from other blastic-appearing hematolymphoid neoplasms.
  2. Describe the characteristic clinical, morphologic, immunophenotypic, and genetic features of several important subtypes of AML.
  3. Describe the recommended evidence-based predictive and prognostic tests once a diagnosis of AML has been established.
