Burnout is almost twice as prevalent in medicine as in other professions. The symptoms of burnout are nondescript and can often be confused with conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and hypothyroidism. It is important to be able to recognize symptoms of burnout, distinguish burnout from underlying medical conditions, and promote prevention and wellness for all pathologists to ensure job satisfaction and patient safety.
This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.
As a result of participating in this activity, you should be able to:
- Describe common indicators of physician burnout.
- Identify common factors that predispose a physician to burnout.
- Recognize personal actions that can prevent and reverse physician burnout.
- Recognize underlying medical conditions that may contribute to suboptimal performance in the workplace.
- Use available resources to help manage and support colleagues with adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
