Description
This activity highlights the impact of preanalytical variables on prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) testing and role of these tests in preoperative evaluation. To help pathologists in their consultative role, a practical algorithm for interpretation of mixing studies for prolonged PT and aPTT is provided along with an overview of vitamin K deficiency, coagulopathy of liver disease, and disseminated intravascular coagulation.

This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.

Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Describe preanalytical variables that affect prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT).
  2. Recognize professional organization guidelines regarding coagulation screening tests in the preoperative setting.
  3. List causes of prolonged PT and aPTT and understand the role of mixing studies in the differential diagnosis.
  4. Differentiate between vitamin K deficiency, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), and coagulopathy of liver disease.
