In the years 2014-2018, microbial contamination of blood products was the third leading cause of transfusion-related fatality. In 2019, the FDA updated their guidance for bacterial mitigation strategies, which will result in significant changes to how platelets are manufactured. In this activity, new strategies for bacterial mitigation in platelets will be reviewed.
This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.
After completing this activity, you should be able to:
- Describe how to create an evaluation plan for patients with suspected transfusion-transmitted bacterial infections.
- List new FDA requirements for bacterial mitigation in platelet units.
- Explain the mechanism of action of pathogen reduction technology.
- Compare the benefits and drawbacks of pathogen reduction technology and large-volume delayed sampling.
