Patients with sickle cell disease often require chronic transfusion therapy throughout their lifetime. However, indications for transfusion are different for patients with sickle cell than the general population. Additionally, patients with sickle cell disease are at higher risk for alloimmunization. Because sickle cell disease is so common in the United States, pathologists should be prepared to assist in the care of these patients to reduce adverse effects of transfusion.
This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.
After completing this assessment activity, you should be able to:
- Recognize various clinical presentations of sickle cell disease (SCD) for which red blood cell transfusion is indicated.
- Advise clinicians concerning guidelines and goals for transfusion in SCD.
- Identify types of testing for red blood cell antigens in SCD.
- Explain how to manage acute complications of SCD using red blood cell exchange transfusion.
- Describe hyperhemolytic syndrome as a complication of red blood cell transfusion in SCD.
