Description
While Cushing syndrome is a rare condition, it is often considered in the differential in patients with a variety of common disorders, such as obesity, hirsutism, menstrual irregularities, diabetes, and hypertension. A multitude of laboratory tests are available for diagnosis and for differentiation of the cause of Cushing syndrome. This activity reviews recommended approaches to the patient with suspected or known Cushing syndrome.

This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.

Objectives
After completing this SAM eligible activity and posttest, you should be able to:

  1. Describe the major conditions associated with hypercortisolism.
  2. List the preanalytic considerations affecting common tests used in the workup of hypercortisolism.
  3. Compare strengths and weaknesses of mass spectrometry and immunoassay methodologies used in the workup of hypercortisolism.
  4. Identify the relative strengths and limitations of the different tests used in the workup of hypercortisolism.
