Description
Peripheral blood lymphocytosis is a common finding with a broad differential diagnosis, including both benign and neoplastic entities. When lymphocytosis is the presenting sign of a hematologic malignancy, the pathologist plays a crucial role in recognition, ensuring the use of appropriate diagnostic ancillary studies, and enabling cost-effective, high quality care.

This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.

Objectives
After completing this SAM eligible activity and posttest, you should be able to:

  1. Describe the optimal work-up for benign and malignant processes that elicit a peripheral blood lymphocytosis.
  2. Compare and contrast the pathologic features of benign and malignant processes that present with an absolute lymphocytosis.
  3. Discriminate between high-count monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis (MBL), low-count MBL, and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).
