Description
Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) with t(15;17) resulting in the PML-RARA gene fusion is a subtype of acute myeloid leukemia associated with disseminated intravascular coagulation and increased fibrinolysis. These coagulopathies are associated with significant early death rates in APL patients. Early recognition is critical as APL is sensitive to treatment with all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) and arsenic trioxide.

This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists and residents.

Objectives
After completing this SAM eligible activity and post-test, you should be able to:

  1. Describe the morphologic features of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL).
  2. Summarize the cytogenetic and molecular changes that define APL.
  3. Summarize the key immunophenotypic characteristics of APL and prognostic indications.
  4. Describe treatment options for patients with APL.
