Description
Platelet refractoriness is defined as the inability to appropriately increase platelet count after a transfusion. It is a diagnostic and management dilemma for providers at the bedside, the transfusion medicine service, and the blood center. Learn clinical presentation of refractory patients, possible causes of platelet refractoriness, laboratory tests to identify antibodies capable of removing transfused platelets from circulation, and strategies for selecting platelet units to optimize the transfusion response.

This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists and residents.

Objectives
After completing this SAM eligible activity and post-test, you should be able to:

  1. Recognize laboratory evidence of platelet refractoriness.
  2. Identify the risk factors for platelet sensitization.
  3. Evaluate the possible etiologies associated with platelet refractoriness.
  4. Analyze different testing strategies to evaluate refractoriness.
  5. Develop transfusion plans to efficiently support patients’ transfusion needs.
