Description
Thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) is a spectrum of diseases characterized by nonimmune microangiopathic hemolytic anemia (MAHA) and thrombocytopenia caused by endothelial injury leading to the formation of fragmented red blood cells and the consumption of platelets. Learn the main acquired TMA syndromes and causes, the stepwise diagnostic approach including laboratory workup, and appropriate treatment.

This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists and residents.

Objectives
After completing this SAM eligible activity and post-test, you should be able to:

  1. Identify causes of acute onset combined anemia and thrombocytopenia.
  2. Recognize hemolytic anemia utilizing the different hemolytic laboratory indicators.
  3. Develop a diagnostic approach to acquired acute onset hemolytic anemia including thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA).
  4. List the different etiologies of acquired TMA and the role of ADAMTS13 testing.
  5. Review drug-induced TMA.
  6. Describe the role of plasma exchange in acquired TMA.
