Description
Direct oral anticoagulation (DOAC) medications are beginning to replace traditional oral vitamin K antagonist medications; therefore, it is necessary to understand how these medications can impact coagulation assay results. Learn how to proactively communicate specific information outlining the impact of DOAC medications on coagulation testing and how to prevent misinterpretation of results which may lead to inaccurate diagnoses and treatment decisions.

This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists and residents.

Objectives
After completing this SAM eligible activity and post-test, you should be able to:

  1. Recognize the name and mechanisms of the direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) medications used for the treatment/prevention of venous thrombosis.
  2. Explain how DOAC medications impact routine and specialized coagulation assays, including clot-based and chromogenic methods.
  3. Identify communication modalities to educate clinical medical providers regarding the impact of DOAC medications on coagulation testing.
