Description
This activity focuses on the causes of absolute monocytosis and the differences in benign and neoplastic presentation. It highlights the applicability of flow cytometry and molecular testing in diagnosis and reviews current WHO criteria and prognostic factors for chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML).

This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists and residents.

Objectives
After completing this SAM eligible activity and post-test, you should be able to:

  1. Recognize morphology of normal monocyte, promonocyte, and monoblast, causes of absolute monocytosis, and differences in neoplastic and benign presentation.
  2. Understand the role of flow cytometry in distinguishing reactive and neoplastic causes of absolute monocytosis.
  3. Apply the current WHO criteria for chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML).
  4. Integrate genetic studies in the interpretation of absolute monocytosis.
