This activity focuses on the causes of absolute monocytosis and the differences in benign and neoplastic presentation. It highlights the applicability of flow cytometry and molecular testing in diagnosis and reviews current WHO criteria and prognostic factors for chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML).

This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists and residents.

After completing this SAM eligible activity and post-test, you should be able to:

  1. Recognize morphology of normal monocyte, promonocyte, and monoblast, causes of absolute monocytosis, and differences in neoplastic and benign presentation.
  2. Understand the role of flow cytometry in distinguishing reactive and neoplastic causes of absolute monocytosis.
  3. Apply the current WHO criteria for chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML).
  4. Integrate genetic studies in the interpretation of absolute monocytosis.
  5. Discuss prognostic factors in CMML.

Passing Requirements
You have a total of three opportunities to take and pass the post-test. If you correctly answer 70% or more of the post-test items, you may claim credit. CME/SAM credit can be applied to the American Board of Pathology (ABP) Self-Assessment Module (SAM) requirements. You must pass the post-test to claim credit; therefore, if you do not pass, you cannot claim any credit.

Attention Canadian Participants: You have three opportunities to take and pass the post-test. If you do not pass the post-test after three attempts, you may still claim CPD credit (self-assessment program credits) for this activity.
