Description
The Clinical Pathology Improvement Program (CPIP) uses clinical pathology cases designed to strengthen the interpretive and administrative skills of pathologists.This Self-Assessment Module (SAM) features a challenging Hematology case. You will be presented with information including an introduction, case presentation, laboratory findings, discussions, and a summary. The case includes a series of thought-provoking questions related to the case. These thought-provoking questions are designed as learning opportunities to check your knowledge and therefore are not scored. After you complete the case, you will be presented with a five-question post-test assessment.
Objectives
After completing this SAM eligible activity and post-test, you should be able to:
- State the key differences between screening tests and diagnostic tests in the setting of prenatal fetal aneuploidy testing.
- Describe the technology and clinical applications of cell-free DNA screening for fetal aneuploidy (noninvasive prenatal screening: (NIPS)).
- Compare NIPS with conventional 1st and 2nd trimester maternal serum screening methods and invasive testing, and describe the benefits and limitations.
- Describe the ACOG/SMFM/ACMG/CAP guidelines regarding options for fetal aneuploidy screening including the roles for NIPS and genetic counseling.
- List the clinical laboratory quality assurance and quality control for cell-free DNA-based NIPS tests used to detect fetal aneuploidy.

This activity meets the American Board of Pathology’s (ABP) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) requirements for Self-Assessment Modules (SAMs).
Continuing Professional Development (CPD), Section 3 Credit
Accreditation in Canada: This event is an Accredited Self Assessment Program (Section 3) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, approved by the Canadian Association of Pathologists - Association Canadienne des Pathologistes. You may claim a maximum of 1.25 hours equivalent to 3.75 credits.
Passing Requirements
You have a total of three opportunities to take and pass the post-test. If you correctly answer 70% or more of the post-test items, you may claim credit. CME/SAM credit can be applied to the American Board of Pathology (ABP) Self-Assessment Module (SAM) requirements. The AMA requires that you pass the post-test in an enduring program to claim credit; therefore, if you do not pass, you cannot claim credit.
Attention Canadian Participants: You have three opportunities to take and pass the post-test. If you do not pass the post-test after three attempts, you may still claim CPD credit (self-assessment program credits) for this activity. Please contact a representative of the CAP Learning Division at 800-323-4040, Option 1 or education@cap.org with the name of this activity and the date completed to request a Letter of Participation.
