Description
This course defines a practical approach to the lung biopsy in the setting of acute injury. An overview of the lung’s stereotypic reaction to injury is presented first, followed by specific morphologic clues that help narrow the differential diagnosis.

Objectives
As a result of participating in this SAM eligible activity, you will be able to:

  1. Build a list of non-neoplastic differential diagnoses for surgical lung biopsies using a pattern-based approach for acute pulmonary injury.
  2. Identify the stereotypic sequence of events following acute injury in the lung.
  3. Recognize the importance of cellular necrosis in the diagnosis of pulmonary infections.
  4. Recognize the diverse spectrum of eosinophilic lung diseases.
  5. Identify the primary and secondary components of acute lung diseases and how individual features relate to the differential diagnosis.
