Re-Released Activity
This course originally released as BPF Testing Self Study and was available between October 11, 2010 and October 11, 2013. The course was updated in October 2013 and re-released under the same name. It was available between October 14, 2013 and October 14, 2019. The content was also reviewed in early 2014 and updated as a result of the ASCO-CAP HER2 Guideline update. That version of the activity, BPF Testing Self Study 2014 Technical Update, was available between March 31, 2014 and March 30, 2017. The content was reviewed and updated in July 2016 and the course was re-released under its current name, Saving Breast Cancer Patients with BPF Testing. It was available between October 12, 2016 and October 11, 2019. The content was reviewed again in August 2019 and the 2018 HER2 guideline update was added. If you completed any of the previous versions, you are NOT eligible to claim CME/SAM credit for completing this updated version.

Description
In this course, you will review the updated ASCO-CAP HER2 and ER/PgR Guidelines. After reviewing the guidelines, you will consider strategies and best practices for implementing them.

Next, you’ll review updated information on the standardization of pre-analytical variables, including specimen handling and tissue fixation, via a current literature review.

Finally, you’ll be provided with a comprehensive overview of molecular analysis and its impact on patient care decisions.

Objectives
After completing this SAM eligible activity and post-test, you shouldl be able to:

  1. Explain the ASCO-CAP ER/PgR Testing Guideline and its implications for laboratory procedures, test results, and patient care.
  2. Explain the 2013 ASCO-CAP HER2 Testing Guideline Update and its implications for laboratory procedures, test results, and patient care.
  3. Determine when it is appropriate to repeat an ER/PgR or HER2 test per the ASCO-CAP Guidelines.
  4. Explain the importance of tissue handling and its impact on ER/PgR and HER2 assay performance.
  5. Explain the potential use of molecular analysis in patient care decisions.

CME Information
Accreditation: The College of American Pathologists (CAP) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

CME Category 1: The College of American Pathologists designates this internet enduring material educational activity for a maximum of 3.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

This activity meets the American Board of Pathology's (ABP) Continuing Certification (CC) requirements for Self-Assessment Modules (SAMs).

Accreditation in Canada: This event is an Accredited Self Assessment Program (Section 3) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, approved by the Canadian Association of Pathologists - Canadian Association of Pathologists - Association Canadienne des Pathologistes (CAP-APC). You may claim a maximum of 4 hour(s) equivalent to 12 credit(s).

Passing Requirements
You have a total of three opportunities to take and pass the post-test. If you correctly answer 70% or more of the post-test items, you may claim credit. CME/SAM credit can be applied to the American Board of Pathology (ABP) Self-Assessment Module (SAM) requirements. You mustnpass the post-test to claim credit; therefore, if you do not pass, you cannot claim any credit.

Attention Canadian Participants: You have three opportunities to take and pass the post-test. If you do not pass the post-test after three attempts, you may still claim CPD credit (self-assessment program credits) for this activity.
