Description
This education activity and self-assessment module (SAM) addresses HER2 test interpretation and reporting in breast cancer using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). The content is based on the 2013 ASCO/CAP HER2 Guideline recommendations. Five interactive case studies representing a range of issues are used to increase knowledge and skill in both test interpretation and reporting. Participants have access to a series of short tutorials and printable take-aways to help solve the case studies and deepen their understanding of HER2 FISH testing. At the end of the education activity, there is a post-test containing 10 multiple choice questions..

Objectives
As a result of participating in this SAM eligible activity, you will be able to:

  1. Accurately interpret HER2 tests as positive, negative or equivocal according to the ASCO/CAP HER2 Guideline criteria.
  2. Evaluate and integrate HER2 test results with clinical and morphologic findings.
  3. Determine appropriate next steps when a HER2 test result is discordant with the patient’s profile or other HER2 tests.
  4. Apply the ASCO/CAP Guideline criteria for reporting HER2 test results.
  5. Provide appropriate resolution and clarification in reports when HER2 results are equivocal, indeterminate, or complex (eg, intratumoral heterogeneity or chromosome 17 aneusomy).
