Description
Pathologists will learn that some laboratory instrumentation connects to the LIS through specialized software designed for this purpose, called middleware. In this activity, pathologists will learn the reasons to use middleware, recommendations for implementing middleware (things that the vendors may not tell you), and important things to consider when designing middleware workflow.

Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Develop a broad understanding of the functionality in middleware.
  2. Recognize the role of the laboratory director in guiding implementation of middleware.
  3. Describe the factors that influence the cost of middleware deployments.
