Description
Establishing a diagnosis of chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can be challenging and has far-reaching clinical consequences. Every biopsy diagnosed as chronic colitis does not imply IBD, and IBD patients do not always show a chronic colitis on biopsy. Using a combination of lecture and slide discussion with digitally-scanned slides, the faculty will address the problem of IBD mimickers and focus on common errors and how misdiagnosis/miscommunication can be avoided by using a systematic approach to biopsy interpretation and standardized reporting nomenclature. This activity was originally presented at CAP19 under the title Common Errors in Diagnosing Chronic Colitis.

Objectives
After completing this SAM eligible activity and post-test, you should be able to:

  1. Identify key features of chronic colitis.
  2. Recognize the importance of using standardized nomenclature in reporting.
  3. Recognize the most commonly misdiagnosed mimickers of inflammatory bowel disease.
