Description
The laboratory has a responsibility to report accurate and reproducible measurements of analytes. To ensure that measurements are “correct,” a quality control (QC) process is carried out that is guided by a specific set of rules in which patient results can be expeditiously reported, whereas failed runs can be quickly identified. Laboratory errors can lead to misdiagnosis, overdiagnosis, management errors, and patient morbidity and mortality. Quality control, as part of a quality assurance program, can minimize laboratory errors, thereby improving patient care. This activity will review the basic set of QC rules first developed by Dr. James Westgard.

This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.

Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Recognize and classify quality control (QC) failures.
  2. Recommend investigations and possible interventions to remedy QC failures.
