Description
Despite advances in automated hematology analyzers, the peripheral blood smear remains an inexpensive and elegant source of information that can have a significant impact on patient care. Peripheral blood smear review is a part of many pathologists’ daily work, but this can be especially challenging when the differential diagnosis includes a red cell membrane abnormality. Recognizing red blood cell membrane abnormalities can help identify inherited conditions and provide clinical pathologic correlation for acquired conditions such as hepatic and renal disease.
This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.
Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:
- Discern true red cell membrane abnormalities from artifacts on peripheral blood smear.
- Describe the pathophysiology of acquired red blood cell membrane abnormalities.
- Describe the molecular basis of inherited red blood cell membrane abnormalities.
