Description
Increased and/or variant lymphocytes are frequently encountered during peripheral blood smear review. Learn to recognize the most common varieties of activated/reactive lymphocytes as well as potential etiologic associations and clinical clues to distinguish benign lymphocytoses from neoplastic conditions requiring further workup.
This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.
Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:
- Recognize the most common variant lymphocyte morphologies and distinguish them from neoplastic lymphocyte populations.
- Narrow the differential diagnosis for a benign lymphocytosis based on morphologic evaluation and correlation with patient demographics and clinical findings.
- Provide appropriate guidance for follow-up testing when faced with common clinical scenarios associated with benign/reactive lymphocyte expansions.
