Description
Timely diagnosis of HIV in patients who present while in labor is important to prevent vertical transmission. Diagnosis of HIV infection before starting pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is critical and with the advent of newer antiviral agents, understanding the methods of antiviral resistance testing has become even more important. Furthermore, interpretation of HIV testing results is challenging in patients after chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy. This activity provides a practical approach to address such challenges.

This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.

Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Describe the role and limitations of point of care HIV assays in HIV testing.
  2. Determine HIV status of patients before initiating or re-initiating pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), or patients who are taking PrEP.
  3. Explain the types of antiviral drug resistance testing, their indications, and interpretation.
  4. Identify the cross-reactivity of HIV nucleic acid amplification assays after chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy.
