Description
Thyroid function is frequently assessed in the daily practice of medicine using the measurements of thyroid stimulating hormone, free T4, and, when appropriate, triiodothyronine. By completing this activity, pathologists will develop expertise in interpreting and recommending thyroid function tests to diagnose hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism and the sick euthyroid syndrome.
This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.
Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:
- Choose appropriate thyroid function tests depending upon the patient’s clinical presentation.
- Interpret thyroid function tests in order to diagnose hypothyroidism (primary or subclinical), hyperthyroidism (primary, T3 toxicosis, or subclinical hyperthyroidism) or sick euthyroid syndrome.
- Recommend against routine thyroid function testing in asymptomatic patients.
