Description
Transfusion of blood components is common amongst hospitalized patients. Although often necessary for patients’ survival, transfusions also pose considerable risk. This module describes the different types of respiratory reactions patients may experience following administration of blood components. In addition, it highlights the approach to diagnosis and management of these reactions.

This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.

Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Describe the changes in vital signs that are characteristic of transfusion-associated circulatory overload (TACO), transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI), and anaphylaxis.
  2. Identify laboratory and ancillary studies that may assist in distinguishing TACO, TRALI, and anaphylactic reactions.
  3. List the two most common causes of transfusion-related fatality.
  4. Create a plan for safer transfusions for a patient with a prior history of TACO or anaphylactic transfusion reaction.
