Description
Timely diagnosis of bloodstream infections is a principal challenge in patient care. While phenotypic susceptibility testing is considered a reference to guide treatment, the wait-time of 24 to 48 hours required for its results could be life-threatening. This activity describes how to resolve the common challenges encountered in the interpretation of results of rapid blood culture identification and genotypic resistance marker detection.
This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.
Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:
- Interpret rapid diagnostics results, including organism identification and antimicrobial susceptibility.
- Recognize the significance of rapid organism species identification in the management of bloodstream infection.
- Distinguish contaminants from pathogens with the help of rapid diagnostic results.
