Description

This activity will address three main topics related to endometrial biopsies: A) benign/reactive changes (ducks); B) premalignant lesions and common malignancies (horses); and C) rare epithelial and mesenchymal lesions (zebras), which are challenging to diagnose in small samples. For practical proposes, this activity uses a case-based presentation and illustrations of diagnostic reporting of histologic findings, which will enhance pathologists’ communication with the clinical team.
This activity was originally presented at CAP24 as Practical Approach to Endometrial Biopsies: Ducks, Horses, and Zebras.

            Objectives

After completing this activity, you should be able to:

          - Identify the spectrum of common benign histologic findings in endometrial biopsies and differentiate them from premalignant and malignant lesions.
- Recognize preneoplastic and neoplastic lesions in endometrial biopsies and apply appropriate ancillary testing in the diagnostic workup.
- Describe the limitations of endometrial biopsies in the diagnosis of certain types of uterine neoplasia.
- Formulate a comprehensive surgical pathology report to enhance effective and accurate communication with clinicians.
