Description
Hemoglobinopathies are the most common monogenic disease of red blood cells worldwide. Given the global trends of migration, pathologists must be aware of their diverse presentations. The pathologist plays a crucial role in ensuring the appropriate use and interpretation of diagnostic studies to facilitate prompt initiation of the appropriate therapy and clinical follow-up.
This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.
Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:
- Describe the clinical features of common abnormalities of red blood cell globin synthesis.
- Describe the appropriate application of laboratory techniques for accurate diagnosis of hemoglobinopathies.
