Description
Syphilis cases have surged globally, with significant increases in the United States prompting updated CDC laboratory recommendations in 2024; this course reviews nontreponemal and treponemal testing algorithms, molecular diagnostic adjuncts, and common pitfalls including pregnancy and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) screening through realistic case scenarios.
This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.
Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:
- Recognize common diagnostic challenges in syphilis serology testing across different stages of the disease, and within special patient populations.
- Apply the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-recommended traditional and reverse testing algorithms for syphilis screening and diagnosis.
- Interpret discordant or unexpected serologic results and provide guidance on clinical management as a consulting pathologist.
- Evaluate laboratory implementation strategies for syphilis tests, including automation, quality control measures, and compliance with regulatory standards.
