Description
ABO discrepancy between the front type and the back type is commonly encountered in pre-transfusion testing. If not resolved, a discrepancy has the potential to lead to a fatal acute hemolytic reaction. Furthermore, ABO discrepancy is a major cause of prolonging the turn-around time and hence, delaying the issuing of type-specific blood components in emergencies.

This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.

Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Define ABO discrepancy in pretransfusion testing.
  2. List and describe the common causes of ABO discrepancy.
  3. Outline and interpret the immunohematologic methods of resolving ABO discrepancy.
  4. Manage ABO discrepancy and the turnaround time of type and screen in emergent transfusions.
