This activity is intended for new as well as experienced team leaders (pathologists or PhD laboratory directors) as well as team members (medical technologists, laboratory supervisors/managers, medical technicians, pathologists, and pathology residents) preparing to perform an on-site inspection and need to fulfill the inspector training requirement.

Description
The purpose of this course is to provide you with the tools and techniques to plan and conduct a successful inspection of a biorepository. It provides inspection or auditing techniques, which will assist you in gathering the appropriate information to determine if your findings support compliance with the requirements. This course is appropriate for new as well as experienced team leaders and team members.

Objectives
After completing this SAM eligible activity and post-test, you should be able to:

  1. Use the information included in the Inspector’s Inspection Packet to make decisions including determining team size and selecting appropriate team members.
  2. Effectively apply time management strategies to facilitate the inspection process.
  3. Evaluate compliance with the requirements for the director’s role and responsibilities.
  4. Inform supervisors of potential deficiencies as the deficiencies are identified (prior to Summation).
  5. Decide whether to cite a deficiency or provide a recommendation based on the information gathered and a consistent interpretation of checklist items.
  6. Apply appropriate Lab General requirements.
  7. Ensure consistent interpretation of common checklist items (eg, QM, PT, QC, patient safety, method specifications, personnel/competency, safety, computers, reports).
  8. Compare findings related to requirements common to all checklists to uncover systemic problems.
  9. Recognize situations which have caused or could cause serious immediate harm to patient or staff (immediate jeopardy) and act accordingly (eg, contact the CAP).
  10. Apply the practice of corrected on-site versus removing deficiencies appropriately.
  11. Ensure deficiency/recommended pages are completed with sufficient detail.
  12. Recognize the purpose and importance of the Pre-Summation and Summation Conferences.
  13. Complete ISR Part A with sufficient detail (including documentation of summary components consistent with deficiencies, issues not covered by checklist).
  14. Recognize the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation (CLA) policies that relate to the conduct of on-site inspections.
  15. Understand the information included in the Team Member Packet and use that information to prepare in advance for the inspection.
  16. Use the appropriate inspection techniques (R-0-A-D)

The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC) Certification Maintenance Program (CMP) accepts this activity to meet the continuing education requirements.

Passing Requirements
You have a total of three opportunities to take and pass the post-test. If you correctly answer 72% or more of the post-test items, you may claim credit. CME/SAM credit can be applied to the American Board of Pathology (ABP) Self-Assessment Module (SAM) requirements. The AMA requires that you pass the post-test in a enduring program to claim credit; therefore, if you do not pass, you cannot claim credit.
