Color Atlas of the Urinary Sediment presents a new approach to urine sediment evaluation. Following the format of the previous CAP color atlases, the text includes photomicrographs of the urinary sediment, a discussion of the pertinent morphologic features of each element, and the results of the identification of the particular element by both referees and participants in the CAP proficiency testing program. Additional images not used in CAP Surveys are also included for completeness. Readers will find this atlas a useful adjunct to urine sediment analysis and a valuable reference for the laboratory.

Contents include:

  • Renal anatomy and physiology
  • Urinalysis in health and disease
  • Diagnostic issues
  • Cells, casts, and crystals
  • Organisms and miscellaneous findings
  • History of urinalysis
  • Origins and application of proficiency testing

Comments

This book opens with an engaging historical chapter, and throughout the volume the photographs and illustrations are works of art. In the review of urinalysis abnormalities there are highly instructive descriptions of the formed elements and the clinical correlations. Further, the text follows a highly logical path, making it extremely understandable and readable. This book belongs in every medical laboratory from the single practicing physician to the large university medical center.
